Slightly Severed

2024
Book
Printed in an edition of 9

Slightly Severed is Emily Gullord’s undergraduate literary honors thesis. Slightly Severed is also a self-publishing project my friend, Sofia, and I undertook to surprise Emily with a printed edition of her work. This was my first self-publishing work, one where I engaged with the slow, enduring process of working through unknowns and graced myself with time and patience.

Layout

For typography, I decided on Pangram Pangram Editorial Old for the cover and Univers for the body.

To orient the reader, I included the title of the work and the section titles in the margins of the spread. The title is severed across the upper left header and lower right footer.

Printing & Binding

The idea for the image inserts came from a friend at BAB. I had glama, a transcluscent matte paper, ready to riso print the images I collected and collaged from Emily’s project. The riso machine refused them each time we tried. I utilized their computer printer and went to town printing, drying, trimming, and prepping my glama inserts to introduce to the text.

With the text and image inserts prepared, I spent an afternoon binding the books with Sofia. I instructed her on the binding procedure and page order, and four hours later, we had 9 self-published books for Emily.
